The Convention was "THE BOMB DIGGIDY" better yet it was OFF THE CHAIN!
This year's District Convention (DCON) was held at Harrison College and Queen's College under the theme "Get out there and fill the Spotlight". The Opening and Closing Sessions along with the workshops were held at Harrison College, while the Recognition Session and Awards Ceremony was held at Queen's College on Monday night.
Again the numbers weren't pleasing but the enthusiasm of the Key Clubbers present was very HEART-WARMING. This enthusiasm was so great that Trustee Melissa, believes in the slogan of the Barbados Tourism Authority- "There's Never A Dull Moment in Barbados!" Also the presence of the Aruban Key Clubbers made it an even more enjoyable Convention.
The Opening Session saw K- Roy Marshall, Emergency Management Consultant and brain child behind "Silver Dollars for Children", giving the Featured Address. Additionally, K-Ernest Marshall, Ltg Elect Div. 27 also gave some remarks along with Trustee Melissa and 2006/07 Governor Danny Babb.
The Recognition Session, which was held at Queen's College was attended by members of UWI's Circle K and their President Tamara Maloney gave address. Awards were given to LTG. Leah Reid (Outstanding Ltg. and Outstanding Board Member), Shara Spencer (3rd place- Talent Show and District Administrator's Award), Riah Batson (1st place-Talent Show and Board Appreciation Award) and the Lawrence Brothers- Marlon and Theodore (2nd place- Talent Show). Faculty Advisors Fiona Springer of Alexandra and Sonja Goodridge of Lester Vaughan also received appreciation awards for their outstanding contributions to the District. The Dance following this event saw Governor Babb, "ROLLING" like Allison Hinds in her music video. Trustee Melissa was also caught in the dance mood as she rocked to all genres of music. Additionally, Akia Drakes the newly elected District Secretary started a congaline the ended on the Hall's stage where we danced the rest of the night away.
The Closing Session held at Harrison College, in my opinion saw a great speech given by Immediate Past Governor Danny as he handed over the guard to Newly elected Governor Amanda Walters. Gov. Danny pledged to give his support to Key Club for the rest of his life in this speech and has inspired many to do the same. Trustee Melissa also gave a speech in which she congratulated the district on its work and gave the District Convention a score of 8/10. Additionally, Marisha Webster received the Governor's Award- Board Member, while Dwayne Worrell received Governor's Award- Appreciation. Special Mention was made of Elon Cadogan, Nicholai Holder, Akia Drakes and Shad Spencer who all played fundamental roles in the District Convention planning and execution.
Following this we went to the beach by the Boatyard for our final session of the District Convention. Here we enjoyed rope swinging, rock climbing on the sea and trampauline jumping. The climax of this event came as we took pics in the water and simply enjoyed its ambience and the people all around. Trustee Melissa was also enthused by a game of cricket and played some massive strokes as she played against some Australians. This session came to end when IP Governor Danny Babb held the gong as Governor Amanda Walters gave an impressive hit to signal the end of the 5th Annual District Convention 2007.
For those who missed it, you missed a superb Convention. Many friendships were formed, which will last for a long time. Let us now look forward to 64th International Convention (ICON) at Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin in Orlando, Florida. July 11th- 15th, 2007.
